When you turn on the power switch, the ions flow from the anode to the cathode which is the positive electrode. These ions flow through the electrolyte (generally a lithium salt in an organic solvent).

- Laptop battery temperatures: Temp higher than 21°C/70°F starts chemical reactions in battery. If you store your battery in or exposure your battery to a high-temperature environment, it will lose capacity to save more power.
- Low laptop battery temperatures: Low or cold temperatures between 0-5°C/32-41°F is yet another cause to damage battery life also reducing its capacity.
- Prolonged Storage. A lithium-ion battery start aging at approximately 8% per month when stored at high temp 21°C/70°F. This decaying rate increases more at higher PC temperatures. If you keep the battery charging, it can lead to a state of deep discharge. Thankfully, all modern laptop batteries cut-off current between 92-98% discharge. Still Avoid this habit.
- Physical Shock. A sudden shock can also cause batteries to age fast because their internal structure is fragile and weak. Although, apparently it seems tough and are usually contained within your laptop.
How to Increase Laptop Battery Life?
In reality you cannot increase lifespan of laptop battery.
As already explained modern batteries are lithium-ion based, so it starts degrading from the moment its first charged.
But you can prolong the degrading period of laptop batteries. Here are some tips to increase laptop battery life span:
- Avoid deep discharging
- Always partially discharge, then recharge
- Do not expose or charge laptop battery in high temperature
- Charge at a lower voltage (if possible)
- Remove the battery during prolonged AC power connections
- Only use partial discharge cycles — 20% to 80-85% is ideal
- When storing for long periods of time, charge to 40%, and periodically recharge the battery
